For any parent, seeing their child unwell and without answers is a terrifying experience. For Danika’s family, what started with symptoms like fever, lethargy, and swollen glands for their two-year-old daughter, Danika, turned into an emotional journey that led them to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and a diagnosis they never expected: leukemia.
“It all began with what we thought was just a common illness. A fever here, a bit of fatigue there—but it wasn’t going away,” recalls Danika’s mother. “We went from doctor to doctor, ruling out strep, COVID, and every other routine illness. When Danika started to limp, we were told it was simply ‘growing pains.’ But deep down, I knew something was wrong.”
After a visit to the ER at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The team’s thorough evaluation finally provided the answers they had been searching for, but it was a reality no parent wants to face: their little girl was battling leukemia.
The pediatric oncology team at Jersey Shore welcomed Danika and her family with open arms and a commitment to treating not just the disease, but also providing the family a direct line of contact 24/7 “The staff at Jersey Shore renewed my faith in humanity,” Danika’s mother Jennifer shares. “They became family to us, caring for the most important person in our world.”
Throughout her treatment, Danika faced many ups and downs, including long hospital stays and heavy doses of medication. There were days when the normally bubbly toddler grew quiet and withdrawn. But the special touches from the Child Life team and the hospital’s unique therapies would always bring her back. “When her music therapist would come in or the therapy dogs visited, her face would light up again,” her mother recalls. “And when Dr. Silverman entered the room, she couldn’t help but smile and call for him (at times from the top of her lungs) “Silver Man.’”
The Child Life Specialists played a crucial role in keeping Danika’s spirits high during treatment. “They went above and beyond,” said Jennifer. “They painted her nails, played dress-up, and found creative ways to encourage her to take her medication.”
One of the biggest highlights of Danika’s treatment journey was attending the Pediatric Prom hosted by another organization, also attended by her care team. For one night, Danika got to be a princess, wearing a beautiful dress and dancing with her favorite people. “Seeing her dance with ‘Silver Man’—Dr. Andrew Silverman—was a moment I will cherish forever. It was a night of laughter and happiness that we never thought possible during this ordeal.”
The family is immensely grateful to the Tackle Kids Cancer initiative and its supporters, including Eli Manning, for shining a light on childhood cancer and giving families hope and a sense of community. “Cancer consumes the whole family—it’s not just another illness. It affects every part of your life. Tackle Kids Cancer and Jersey Shore University Medical Center became our lifeline.”
Danika’s journey continues in the maintenance stage of care, which aims to prevent cancer from returning after initial therapies. But thanks to the unwavering support of her care team, her family has renewed hope and faith for the future. “We are so glad we chose Jersey Shore. They didn’t just treat our daughter’s cancer—they treated our family’s heart.”
