Teacher Matthew Tina of Oradell is gearing up to fulfill a lifelong dream: running the TCS New York City Marathon. Next month, he will proudly lace up his shoes as a member of #TeamTKC, dedicating his race to support Tackle Kids Cancer, a cause that holds a special place in his heart.
Matthew’s journey to this moment began long before his recent training sessions. Running has been a part of his life since his high school and college days, where he competed in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track over 10 years and 27 seasons, and participated in various half-marathons along the way. Yet, despite his past experience, he had always longed to conquer the challenge of running a full marathon. When the opportunity to join #TeamTKC presented itself, Matthew saw it as his “now or never” moment—his chance to combine his passion for running with a purpose greater than himself.
“Raising these much-needed funds to help support these kids and their families means so much to me,” Matthew shared. “Tackle Kids Cancer is such a great organization, and I find solace in doing something that will ultimately help with research or support programs.”
Receiving his #TeamTKC shirt a few weeks ago was a defining moment for Matthew. In that instant, he realized that he wasn’t just representing patients and the cause itself; he was stepping into a legacy – a community of individuals who have come together to rally for those affected by pediatric cancer since 2015. Knowing that he carries the support of friends, family, and mentors, like children’s hospital namesake and longtime friend of Hackensack Meridian Health Joseph Sanzari on this journey, makes the experience all the more meaningful.
“I want to thank my parents for their unconditional love and support throughout my marathon journey and for their fundraising effort,” said Matthew. “I also want to give a big thank you to Mr. Sanzari for his belief in me. It is a huge honor to represent him and the patients and their families.”
Matthew is running not only for personal triumph but for the countless lives touched by Tackle Kids Cancer. His dedication is a testament to how one individual’s passion can inspire others and drive change. As he heads to the starting line of his first New York City Marathon, Matthew knows that each step he takes is a step toward hope, support and a brighter future for those who need it most.
To date, Matthew has raised more than $15,000, and counting. We thank him for his incredible support and wish him the best of luck in next month’s NYC Marathon!
