Mini Manning: TKC MVP Olivia Becomes Eli Manning for School Project

As we approach Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, we are reminded of the extraordinary stories that embody resilience and hope, and the power that philanthropy has on our youngest patients, like Tackle Kids Cancer (TKC) Most Valiant Patient (MVP) Olivia of Greenwich, CT.

Last spring, Olivia’s third-grade class was assigned a wax museum project in which students chose to dress up as important figures who made a difference in the world. While many chose historic figures and scientists, Olivia selected former New York Football Giants quarterback, Super Bowl champion and Team TKC Captain Eli Manning for his contributions to Tackle Kids Cancer, which has profoundly impacted her life.

“Olivia and I talked about all the great work that Eli has done to help raise awareness and funds for Tackle Kids Cancer,” says Dory, Olivia’s mother. “She instantly felt a personal connection to him and decided she wanted to be Eli for her project.”

At age two, Olivia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and underwent CAR-T Cell therapy, a groundbreaking immunotherapy only available then at the Children’s Cancer Institute at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. This treatment, spearheaded by Alfred Gillio, M.D., director of the Children’s Cancer Institute, was made possible thanks to the crucial work and the generous support of donors. Only 4% of the national budget supports pediatric cancer, underscoring the vital role of donor contributions.

We applaud Olivia for spreading awareness about Tackle Kids Cancer to her class. Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact of community and the incredible progress that can be achieved through collective efforts. We thank Olivia for her support and celebrate her courage and determination today, and everyday!
